Junior Alex Mossing earned a state championship at 138lbs and became the 2nd State Champion in Central Catholic school history, first since 1999. Alex dominated his four opponents throughout the three day tournament pinning his opponent in the opening round, defeating his quarterfinal foe by a score of 6-0 and finishing his semifinal match by fall in 4:42. In the title bout Alex punished his opponent by a score of 8-1. Title bout video. Mr. Mossing also becomes the first person in school history to stand on the state podium three times, completing his Junior season with a record of 38-4 and 125 career victories. On the same evening Coach Mitch Naufel was inducted into the Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association hall of fame, Coach Naufel is with good company along with CCHS wrestling pioneer Coach Dan Piloseno. Both have been inducted based on their contributions to Toledo Central Catholic wrestling.

On day 2 in Columbus,OH Alex Mossing earned the right to compete for a state championship by defeating two quality opponents. In the championship quarterfinals Alex defeated Senior Dylan Kager (43-3) of Mantua Crestwood by a score of 6-0.In the championship semifinals after building a 15-2 lead Alex pinned District champion senior Cordell Byrd of Hamilton Ross (30-7) in 4:42. On day one the Irish went 1-2. Junior Alex Mossing (35-4) pinned Junior Zach Johnson (32-13) of Wilmington in 2:43. On Friday morning (10:40am) Alex faces Senior Dylan Kager (43-2) of Mantua Crestwood in the championship quarterfinals. In opening round competition Senior Matt Pool(35-8) lost a hard fought battle in overtime by a score of 3-1 to Ana Abduljelil (46-2) of Whitehall-Yearling. In consolation round 1, Matt Pool wrestled Junior Brad Taton from Mentor Lake Catholic and was narrowly defeated in overtime 3-1. Matt capped off an outstanding four years with 128 career victories! We wish Matt the best of luck in his future endeavors as he pursues a degree in biology at the Ohio State University as an Evans scholar. The Irish advance three wrestlers to the individual state championships beginning Thursday afternoon in Columbus. Nate Hagan and Alex Mossing were crowned as district champions and Matt Pool finished 2nd! Josh Portillo finished 5th and is a state alternate. In total, eleven CCHS wrestlers competed in 44 matches at the district meet and came away with 26 victories, scoring the 2nd most points in the 48 team field. Congratulations Irish wrestlers!

The Irish advance 11 wrestlers to district competition! Alex Mossing (138) and Chris Norwood (220) were crowned as individual champions! Matt Pool (113), Nate Hagan (126), and Shawn Murrey (170) earned runner-up honors. Josh Mossing (120), Michael Gregory (195), and JQuan Fisher (285) placed third. Josh Portillo (106), Richard Jackson (145), and Colin Kaucher(152) finished fourth.
In addition to the eleven district qualifiers, Toledo Central Catholic also had three fifth place sectional placers in Nigel Cramer (132), Lucas Beauch (160) and Jared Fann (182). Toledo Central Catholic finishes the Team season with a Final Four State Finish! In the final four dual meets of the 2012-2013 wrestling season the Irish of Toledo Central Catholic competed against the 8th, 6th, 3rd, and 1st ranked Ohio Division II teams. The squad was able to defeat #8 Wauseon 35-25, #6 Clyde 46-15, and #3 Lexington 37-30, but fell short against #1 St Paris Graham by a score of 43-18. Regional Results. Final State Results.
The squad came a long way from the initial competition at the Archbold Frickers Duals hosted at Defiance College and opening dual meet with Wauseon HS where the Irish began the season with a 4-7 record. Lacking several football players from a state championship season and a couple other starters due to preseason injuries, CCHS had a slow start. After a little patience and lots of hard work, the squad started to gel as a team and began to believe in themselves, finishing the last half of the season with a 14-2 dual meet record. The team and Coach Guerra's goals for the first segment of the season were achieved! Now heading into the individual championship season the guys are ready for that challenge as well!! Toledo Central Catholic (#2 seed) traveled to Clyde H.S. (#1 seed) for the Divsion II Region 9 finals. The Irish captured victories in ten of fourteen individual bouts to distance Clyde by a score of 46-15! Central Catholic placed twelve of fourteen wrestlers in the top four, sent eight to the finals and crowned three Champions while finishing as team runners-up to Oregon Clay. Matt Pool, Josh Mossing, Alex Mossing, Colin Kaucher, Michael Gregory, and JQuan Fisher were named to the TRAC All-Academic team (the criteria is: Sophmore,Junior, & Senior varsity letter winners with a cummulative GPA > 3.0). Senior Matt Pool (113), Sophomore Nate Hagan (126), and Freshman Richard Jackson (138) each claimed individual titles at the 2nd annual Three Rivers Athletic Conference Championships. Nate's victory secured his second TRAC championship! Josh Portillo (106), Josh Mossing (120), Alex Mossing (145), Colin Kaucher (152), Michael Gregory (195) each finished as runners-up. Toledo Central Catholic traveled to Oregon Clay for the Junior Varsity TRAC Championships. Freshmen Justin Portillo (106), Josh Venia (113), Rosendo Beltran (120) and Sophomore Xavier Gaines each were crowned as individual champions! Alec Vaughn finished as a runner-up. Central Catholic (#2 seed) defeated Defiance (#3 seed) 62-6 in the opening round securing thirteen victories against a young Bulldog squad. In the second round the Irish battled the top seeded Wauseon Indians, each team winning seven individual matches. CCHS scored bonus points in six of seven victories while the Indians earned bonus points in two of their seven victories. Toledo Central Catholic outpointed Wauseon by a score of 35-25. Double winners on the night were: Josh Portillo, Matt Pool, Alex Mossing, Richard Jackson, and Shawn Murrey. The Irish advance to the regional final at Clyde HS, the winning team next Wed advances to the Elite Eight Team State Championship in Columbus on Feb 9th. Go Irish! Toledo Central Catholic captured the Anthony Wayne Duals team championship by defeating Lima Shawnee, Sylvania Northview, Anthony Wayne, Berea, and Perrysburg by a combined score of 334-34. Seven CCHS wrestlers were undefeated on the day: Josh Portillo, Matt Pool, Nate Hagan, Alex Mossing, Lucas Beauch, Chris Green, and J'Quan Fisher.
The Irish competed in 70 individual bouts and had their hand raised 63 times! Central Catholic hosted four teams in the front gym for a regional quarterfinal wrestling event. Coach Tony Guerra's wrestling squad traveled to Columbus OH to compete in the 52nd Annual Catholic Invitational Tournament. The Irish finished 2nd out of the field of thirty Ohio Catholic school teams. Junior Alex Mossing earned an individual title at 138lbs and earned the tournament's 'Outstanding Wrestler Award'. Also earning an individual title was Freshman Josh Portillo at 106lbs. Josh outpointed his opponent from Parma Padua at the buzzer!
In all, Toledo Central Catholic put 11 wrestlers on the podium: Sophomore Nate Hagan finished 2nd. Freshman Richard Jackson and Sophomore Lucas Beauch placed 3rd. Shawn Murrey placed fifth. Josh Venia, Rosendo Beltran, Nigel Cramer, Colin Kaucher, and JQuan Fisher placed sixth in their individual weight classes.

For the fourth year running, the Irish wrestling team successfully retained the Toledo Catholic Cup. Toledo Central Catholic defeated St Francis by a score of 58-12 and outpointed St John's 49-18. CCHS won 22 out of 28 individual matches. Ten CCHS wrestlers were undefeated on the night including four freshmen: Josh Portillo at 106lbs, Josh Venia at 113lbs, Rosendo Beltran at 120lbs and Richard Jackson at 145lbs. Four Sophomores were also double winners: Nate Hagan 126lbs, Colin Kaucher 152lbs, Lucas Beauch 160lbs, Michael Gregory at 195lbs; Junior Alex Mossing and Senior Nigel Cramer also earned two victories! The Irish traveled to Oregon Clay to face the Div I 5th ranked team in Ohio. It was an exciting "Wrestle for the Cure" dual meet complete with pink singlets, a full gym, music, cheerleaders and wrestling under a spotlight. The event was covered by BCSN and The Toledo Blade (Photos). With 9 Freshmen and Sophomores, 2 Juniors and a
Senior in the lineup, the Irish were outpointed 47-12. Freshmen Josh Portillo and Richard Jackson recorded wins by decision while Junior Alex Mossing earned bonus points by pinning his opponent. Freshman Josh Venia moved up a weight class to battle Clay's returning state place winner in a tough fought match. The Irish continue to prepare to be at full strength for the post season!

Varsity Red -
Eleven Toledo Central Catholic wrestlers traveled to Novi, Michigan to participate in the Detroit Catholic Central Invitational finishing as Team Runner-ups out of the field of 19 teams (see scores). The Irish competed in a total of 43 individual matches and earned 26 victories. Every weight class contained several top state ranked wrestlers and each of the CCHS wrestlers placed in the top eight of their weight division. At 103lbs the final under the spotlight was an all Toledo Central Catholic matchup. Unseeded Freshman Josh Venia (who upset the #1, #4 seeds enroute to the championship match) was narrowly outpointed by Freshman Josh Portillo by a score of 2-1. Congrats JoshV and JoshP!

Eleven wrestlers from Toledo Central Catholic traveled to Brecksville Broadview Heights for the 52nd annual Holiday Tournament and finished 14th place out of the field of 45 competitive teams from across the state of Ohio and Michigan. The Irish hosted Milan Edison and Amherst Steele in a varsity tri-match. Five Seniors were recognized: Xzavier Tate, Ben Njaim, Nigel Cramer, Shawn Murrey, and Matt Pool. Varsity Grey - CCHS traveled to Fremont for the Mark Coleman Duals. The squad competed against Firelands, Fremont St. Joe, Bedford Mi, Oregon Clay Green, Lakewood St. Edward Green. Junior Varsity - The Irish traveled to Whitmer for the Panther JV Invitational Tournament. Winning individual titles for the Irish were Josh Venia and Rosendo Beltran.
Varsity Red
- Defiance College was the location of the Fricker's Duals. Toledo Central Catholic Varsity Red opened their season with 10 dual meets. Undefeated on the weekend were Josh Portillo and Matt Pool. Varsity Grey - The varsity grey competed in the Ironhorse Wrestling Invitational at Montpellier High School. Josh Venia and Zach Kern earned individual championships!
Freshmen - The Irish traveled to Maumee for the Andy Bates Freshman Invitational. Justin Portillo was 5-0 on the day and won an individual championship. Joey Hardison was 4-1 on the day and placed second.
